Naturalization: 5 Key Requirements for Obtaining American Citizenship
The 5 Fundamental Requirements
1. Permanent Residence (Green Card)
You must have been a lawful permanent resident for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
2. Physical Presence
You must have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months of the last 5 years.
3. Continuous Residence
You cannot have had absences of more than 6 months without justification. Absences of more than 1 year generally break continuous residence.
4. Good Moral Character
You must demonstrate good moral character during the last 5 years. This includes:
- No serious criminal history
- Paying taxes
- Meeting legal obligations
5. English and Civics Knowledge
You must pass two exams:
- English: Basic reading, writing, and speaking
- Civics: 100 questions about U.S. history and government (they ask 10, you must get 6 right)
Exceptions
- Over 50 with 20+ years of residence: Exempt from English exam
- Over 55 with 15+ years of residence: Exempt from English exam
- Disabilities: Can request medical waivers
